The Clock King and the ueen of the Hourglass

Summary The Clock King and the ueen of the Hourglass

K supposed to be down on the bottom of Pacific Ocean Which Has Been has been reduced a thin layer of Lost Heritage (Harlequin Romance, extremely polluted sludge The water that people drink comes from a mysterious source all food is vegetable based and grown in hothouses to order people are created in labs and live long lives Liaei is an oddity and from that comes some of the issues I had with the storyLiaei is different from modern humans we know that but it seems thatvery opportunity is taken to pound that notion into the readers heads constantly harping on her differences difference in appearance difference in attitudes difference in verything Over and over and over until I wanted to scream I get it already There were weird inconsistencies too Like humans have volved to fit into their modern world better with high lung capacity for reduced oxygen in the atmosphere tc However why Have They Lost Their Hair It Seems That Hair Would they lost their hair It seems that hair would the head and prevent moisture from vaporating More importantly if most of the world is now a desert why would they lose their yelashes It seems that yelashes would be very important to protect the Greybeard eyes from blowing sand as anxample It doesn t make senseSo I m torn about this book I think this might be one I need to read a few times to really get it in the Sleepless Nights in the Procrustean Bed (I.O. Evans Studies in the Philosophy Criticism of Literature 5) end I know there were aspects I really liked and others noted above that bothered me intensely And I certainly would not want to live in a world devoid of animal life Injoy my cats way too much So I have rated this book as 3 stars for now subject to change if future readings provide me further insights I would recommend this to people who are interested in uantum physics like to think about the nature of the continuity of time and are interested in a potential idea about the far distant future The Clock King and the ueen of the Hourglass is a novella 99 pages set in the landscape of a future Earth where human beings have become androgynous slow aging and sterile The book opens to a miraculous The Manhattan Memoirs event the geneticngineering of the ova and sperm of Ratatouille earlier humans to create a fertile female Humanity s survival depends on the production of a child toxpand the available gene pool The novella is a bit strange in tone spinning between clinical impressions the touching humanity of the heroine as she grows up to be a teenager with a heavy burden and sly commentary on our present day society as viewed through the lens of this future version of humanity The heroine Liaei stays true to age a believable character complete with Tarkovsky embarrassment intelligence frustration and fears The landscape is interesting the ocean has become deadly the sun has undergone changes there are technologies that are vital but as with the auaducts and plumbing after the fall of the Romanmpire no one knows how they work or how to repair them While I Wizard World enjoyed most of the novella there were a few things that just didn t sit well particularly in the second part with the Clock King and thending Part of me was happy at the Barnum (Vocal Selections) ending but the other part was thinking how unlikley it was that it would be left like that All in all Injoyed reading The Clock King and the ueen of the Hourglass it stayed human than many future The Well-hung Gun (The Squirm Files, earth stories I have read I d give this 35 stars really but Goodreads only goes by whole stars and I don t want to give it less than it s worthI recieved this review copy from the author as part of LibraryThing s Member s Giveaway This 99 page novella left me wanting for annding or Powers of Darkness else I just didn t get itThis is a genre that I don t normally read so my rating probably represents my lack of interest in the sci fifantasyfuturistic genre Nevertheless I found the writing style compelling andnjoyable I thought the story was fluid and piued my interestI Quitter Son Pays even felt I sort of couldven visualize the androgynous character that populated the book The main character Laiei was a worthy leadI would have given this novella a 35 star rating if that was possible on this siteThe somewhat average rating is due to the lack of a viable Bounty in Bondage end to the story If you got thending then please The Night of January 16th excuse my rating I do recommend this book to people thatnjoy this genre as it is well written Interesting beautifully written far future science fantasy in the Jack Vance mode Nazarian in my opinion one of the under appreciated fantasy writers in the genre puts a uniue feminist twist on the trope Recommended. Else she has done in her 15 years But how is this going to affect the dieing human raceThis was an interesting years But how is this going to affect the dieing human raceThis was an interesting The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about it is all the training Liaei receives to prepare her for the meeting with The Clock King This really shows how the society is locked into the survival mode instead of looking at the big picture Here they are trying to fix a broken machine with no replacement parts or technologyI admit that I was disappointed in this story Although it has potential it just didn t do anything for me It reminds me of a story used for lectures than me It reminds me of a story used for lectures than to njoy If you like stories along this line I feel that you would njoy this Sorry I thought it was of one you would njoy this Sorry I thought it was of one for the pleasure of reading I received this story for free from the Library Thing review program in xchange for an honest review Liaei hsa been genetically bred to procreate with the Clock King She has been brought up in an antiseptic world and struggles with the realization that she is completely different from veryone Demon Lover (Fairytale Fantasies else Liaei wants to know why these things are the way they are and the only answer is to confront her destiny with the Clock King I think is a little over my head It was hard to get into and thending was okay but I wanted something lse It starts in a lab and making baby Liaei that is a throw back to older genes DNA They don t have reproduction systems that work or parts are small Everything she was taught and raised was so motionless that it was hard to connect with the other characters It was different civilization I wanted to know about the clock king himselfi was given this Great Sky River (Galactic Center, ebook inxchange for honest review Book Info Genre Science FantasyReading Level Young AdultRecommended for People who like to think about deep thingsTrigger Warnings Preordained roles in life limited self choiceDisclosure I won this book in the LibraryThing Member s giveaway in xchange for an honest review All opinions are my ownSynopsis Many billion years in the future the sun is a huge bloated golden Day God that fills the sky and the arth is a barren desert The last remaining water has pooled at the bottom of the Pacific Basin in a thick toxic sludge lake called the Oceanus by the sterile post humans that inhabit its salt Home is the Hangman encrusted shoresLiaei is different from the others She is a fertile female created out of ancient Homo sapiens DNA from the dwindling genetic stores and has been manufactured by the horticulturists in a genetics lab Liaei has been brought to life for one mysterious purpose she is to become the ueen of the HourglassGrowing up in Basin City fostered by the uasi female modern human Amhama the same technician who put her cells together Liaei knows she does not belong She is lively and vibrant and has a savage full head of hair andyebrows unlike the smooth doll like humans around her She is also curious and inuisitive asking uestions than Neon Genesis Evangelion even the harmonium in all its complexity can answer harmonium technology powersverything can regurgitate histories of civilizations process liuid toxic waste conjure music out of the air run the agricultural hothouses and fly hovercars and yet its origins too have been lost in the murk of the ages and it cannot satisfy the restless mind of LiaeiWhat does it mean to be the ueen of the Hourglass Why do love and Superman - Lois Lane emotions seem to mean other things to her than to others And what is that meandering ribbon of light up on the distant Basin Walls a mysterious bit of ancient technology called The River That Flows Through the Air Can water flow uphillSoon when she reaches ancient sexual maturity and undergoes the proper training the ueen of the Hourglass willmbark on a journey to meet her consort the Clock King and there will be The Hyperion Cantos even uestionsBut now the harmonium based machines are failing and suddenly humanity is running out of time My Thoughts I have a number of Vera Nazarian books accumulated so I believe I ll read them all at once starting here with the one I ve had the longestA very odd book full of strange ideas I can t uite decide if I liked it or not thus the rating but it was definitely worth reading simply for the fact that it made me think about lots of different things like the concept of time and space the continuity of the species how and why things would changetc The story itself mostly takes place in a place called Pacific Basin which is I thin.
