Yo Soy El DiegoMons to battle but for every crisis or perceived hardship he encounters there always seems to be another scapegoat or baddie to blame it on instead of taking responsibility himself for it If only he were as willing to take accountability for his many mistakes as he was for his many achievements "but in there lies the mystery and for many the appeal of the man that volatility and rebelliousness "in there lies the mystery and for many the appeal of the man that volatility and rebelliousness many would agree gave him the wonderful football skills he impressed millions with In the end nobody is perfect and without doubt Maradona remains one of the best footballers to have ever played the game and for most of the people he brought so much pleasure to that is than enough and all that really Matters To Them The Best Footballer Of All Time In to them The best footballer of all time in eyes and a great book does him ustice Not worth the hours I put into reading it Meandering rambling nonsense highlighting Diego s god complex While I respect Maradona for being such a fantastic player that respect is lost the moment he opens his mouth similar to Pel This biography only guarantees that he views himself as God s gift to the world who would have figured I couldn t help but roll my eyes on reading how he never forgave C sar El Flaco Menotti for leaving him off the triumphant 1978 FIFA World Cup winning team Please Maradona you were 18 at the time get over it Even shameless is the section at the end of the biography where he rates players highly then denounces them if they have once said a bad thing about him My only bronca about reading this biography is the time I wasted dreadfully reading it An insight into Maradona s view of Maradona Take it with a pinch of salt Entertaining nonetheless There Are Few Autobiographies Where are few autobiographies where individual comes off worse than your initial perception However Maradona is the exception clearly an immoral and overall unlikeable character Nevertheless an interesting read and account of a sporting genius An autobiography can tell you a lot about a person not only from what they write but how they write and even what they have left out Diego Maradona is a larger than life character who has had than his fair share of controversy but is undeniably one of the greatest football players of all time El Diego is the translated story of his life up to mid noughties Translator Marcela Araujo has done a fantastic Pic job of converting the flavour of Maradona s words into the English language going so far to explain her methods at the start of the book Maradona is prone to using words that are so Argentinian as there is not direct translation to English rather than attempt to do this Araujo has kept them in the original language Due to Maradona s passion you understand within the context of the sentence what he is trying to sayWith so much to draw upon El Diego should be the one of the best football biographies of all time but it is not The passion is there you get a real sense of why Maradona s life has been so eventful his passions lie on the surface and he is unable to contain them The sections where he rants about the injustices of the faceless corporations or meddling directors are great The sections about football also contain this passion but here he also lists player after player after player I am not a fan of football biogs that are all I loved playing with Razza Dazza and Gazza The interesting sections are when he highlights individuals and give his full unedited opinionPerhaps the biggest let down and most obvious omission in the book is his struggle with drugs He does mention them the bans etc but unlike any other player his connection with drugs has been a major part of his career He sidesteps the issue most of the time and never admits much wrong doing instead blaming others or genuine mistakes Connecting Maradona s hard early life with his compulsion to embrace life drugs and all is very interesting it isust a shame that the reader has to make this connection rather than El Diego talking about it himself An interesting autobiography that is worth a reading but does feel like Maradona is trying to hide a hollow centre by wrapping it in a gaudy and passionate facade. Napoli and the shame and disgrace of his positive drug test at USA 1994 In this amazingly honest autobiography we see inside the mind of one of the most talented controversial and complex sportsmen of our timesa man torn between the demands of corporate club bosses the fans the media and his own tempestuous personal life With a new epilogue exclusive to this paperback edition that brings Maradona's remarkable story up to date and than eighty wonderful photographs Maradona is a confessional a revelation an apology and a celebration. The WORST book But the BEST worst book He d been a good captain yes and I always said so But I was the one who displaced him the great captain the true great captain was is and always will be me I had to read the autobiography of someone who could be as cocky as him It is a fairly typical one slightly high on the enjoyment scale but ust the routines of press conferences injuries training trophies and transfersThe one thing he takes very seriously was to build a strong national team and to captain them Yes it s sanitized yes there s politics yes there are drugs and there are no real insights into techniue or anything because of which he s considered the greatest of all timesomehow i feel Pele is losing that race But the one reason that it sticks is that during the whole book you get the feel of a very eager uncle trying to tell you a story who once upon a time was very good with a ball at his feet And for that it becomes readable the downfall and everything PS Reading it in the age of Messi gives a better perspective of why even a shy diminutive boy like him has to go through the emotional ringer of captaining Argentina and win them a trophy in order to be mentioned in the same breath as Maradona Just as you would expect from Maradona his autobiography is uite different from most sportsmen He is very honest about his career anyone with an interest in football will enjoy this Poor old Diego for so many years we have told him repeatedly You re a God You re a star You re our salvation that we forgot to tell him the most important thing You re a man So said Jorge Valdano one of Maradona s team mates They say that whoever you regard as the best player ever to have played the game depends on the era in which you grew up in Like millions of others I can still remember watching Mexico 86 the tournament where one Diego Armando Maradona remember watching Mexico 86 the tournament where one Diego Armando Maradona his status on the grandest of global stages as the greatest player in the world at the time with his overall performance and that goal against England as well as winning the World Cup with Argentina he was also awarded the Golden Ball by FIFA This was initially published in Spanish and the text is flavoured with Maradona s colourful use of Lunfardo and we get treated to such wonderful terminology like Take the cat s milk give the dog its face back and let the tortoise get away which gives an added authenticity to the feel of the biography There is a bizarre picture of Maradona included in here that shows him standing naked in a bath holding his hands over his manhood and underneath it reads I have nothing to hide nothing This blatant contradiction between actions and words really sums up the man overall We get some interesting background into his happy time at Boca Juniors though his time at Barcelona would prove to be a lot less happier as he endured a broken ankle hepatitis and there was no love lost for the football director Nunez Of course it was Napoli where Maradona played his finest club football and enjoyed his most successful period Looking back at the sheer depth of uality of world class players from around the globe who were playing in the Serie A at the time you really get a flavour for the intensity and expectations all round You had Platini at Juventus Rummenigge at Inter Laudrup at Lazio Zico at Udinese Socrates and Passarella at Fiorentina Falco at Roma and Elkjaer at Verona these were some of the best players in the world and many of them still feature high in countless best ever lists around the planetIn spite of his devastation at not being picked for the 78 World Cup Argentina still went onto win it without him He soon bounced back when he played a significant part in the winning side of the FIFA World Youth Championship World Cup Now FIFA U 20 World Cup in Japan in 1979 Where he claims that it was the best team he was ever part of He opens up about the it was the best team he was ever part of He opens up about the disappointment of the 82 world cup where he was booted around World Cup where he was booted around least by Italy s Claudio Gentile and then being sent off during the 3 1 defeat to Brazil after kicking Batista in the balls By the mid 80s he was earning millions of dollars a year. Sometimes I think that my whole life is on film that my whole life is in print But it's not like that There are things which are only in my heartthat no one knows At last I have decided to tell everythingDiego Maradona A poor boy from a Buenos Aires shanty town Diego Maradona became a genius with the soccer ball kicking his way to the heights of South American European and world soccer yet his struggles with the pressures of life inside and outside the game repeatedly threatened to tear him and his legend down Hero or villain one. ,
