Two Widows and the Misdirected Message jHome comfort conflict anticipation responsibility hope generosity belief impressions companionship trust risk and change Highly recommend to all This book reminds me of something I would have read when I was a kid not that it s out of touch or dated butust that it s the kind of beautiful simple story that I would have loved in grade school that I would have wanted to read again and again There s no gimmick no vampires wizards or talking dogs Not that those are bad things this is ust a different kind of book What there is is the well crafted story of A YOUNG GIRL ON THE CUSP young girl on the cusp her teens This is her last summer before middle school starts she ust got her ears pierced and her father has started seriously dating someone since her mother died six years before But Lucy doesn t like change especially when it occurs at Pierson s Point where she has spent every summer of her life at her grandparents beach house How she deals with the changes that are coming how her family deals with it and what she learns this summer are uietly beautifully amazing A great book I love the voice of the story I found this book to be endeering Lucy is going to be in 7th #grade and is getting ready for changes in life with a new school She likes things #and is getting ready for changes in life with a new school She likes things stay the same and not to change she so is looking forward to Pierson Point for the summer There she finds everything stays the same there She has plans she will start a camp for the kids that live there during the summer and she will be drawing in The Book She Draws In book she draws in year This summer she will find out will not be like those she has had every summer of her life on the point She will find that her former science partner who by the way is a erk will be in her life this summer She will find that she still mournes the mother who passed away when she was six yearsold she will find her dad has a new loveThis young adult book was good it took me back to the changes I went through when I was in middle school It reminded me that life is all about change Lucy also has a black lab and that took me back to one that I had I found this book to even be one that adults can find entertaining I gave it four stars because I sat down and read it all in one days reading Karen Day is a gifted story telle. Cy can't stand each other To top it off Dad wants his girlfriend to become a bigger part of Lucy's lifeKaren Day's engaging novel shows that people aren't always what they seem and that friendship can be found in the most unusual places From the Hardcover edition.

every summer goes down to her house by the ocean with her dad But this time alsosummer goes down to her house by the ocean with her dad But this time also his girlfriend Lucy must struggle her dads girlfriend the annoying kid from school and the memories of her mother who passed away when she #was six This is definitely one of my favorites of all time It kept me reading for hours on end I #six This is definitely one of my favorites of all time It kept me reading for hours on end I could not put it down Checked it our from the library and finished it that very same day Only about 210 pages a great weekend read for anyone It truly hit home for me I could relate to many parts of this amazing novel by Karen Day it reaches youngsters the value of family and friends by your side and not to udge a book by its cover everyone has another side that doesn t always show One of my favorites for sure After hearing Karen speak at an author event I knew I had to read her book And I was not disappointed This is a carefully wrought story of a young girl coming to terms with her mother s death and the inevitability of change Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Maine coast Karen Day takes us through the emotional roller coaster of a 12 year old who wants nothing to fit in and to have the things she loves remain the same But life intercedes an unpleasant classmate a potential step mother new construction and the looming prospect of a new school seem to conspire against Lucy who must confront her fears in order to grow But Lucy is a strong character even when she doesn t have the ability to communicate her feelings she ust wants to do the right thing I was really impressed by this book Very well written and a good fit for kids who like realistic fiction with something a bit substantial in a story Sometimes kids who read my novels write to me and ask what else I think they d like so I ve started keeping a list of other books stories about regular kids that feel right for 5th 6th and 7th graders who haven t made that leap to older young adult titles Karen Day s A MILLION MILES FROM BOSTON is one of those books Lucy s excited about spending the summer before middle school at her family s cottage in Maineuntil she gets there and realizes things are School's out That means Lucy is off to her favorite place Pierson Point Maine where she spends summers with her family And as she tries to forget her worries about starting middle school and about Dad's new girlfriend Lucy can't get there soon enough Pierson Poin. Oing to be different this summer There s a new family including the most annoying boy in her school at home new plans for the community s Big House and in her school at home new plans for the community s Big House and of alla new woman in her dad s life and this one looks like she s going to be around a while It makes Lucy long for her mom who died when she was sixand makes her wish things could go back to the way they were But sometimes getting older means looking at things a little differently seeing the other side and Lucy s summer in Maine a million miles from Boston helps her do ust that This is a lovely fun and heartfelt book full of beautifully drawn characters that I think young readers are going to love as much as I did Newton Mass author Karen Day does it again with this bittersweet tale of a summer on the Maine coast Lucy is eager to get back to the one place where she feels closest to her late mother the family s summer cottage But this year it s different First an irritating classmate shows up with his family in a new McMansion that ruins the close knit feel of the seasonal community And now her father s new girlfriend keeps coming up on weekends trying to get Lucy to warm up to her It s a summer of growing pains as Lucy realizes that memories aren t perfect time can t stand still and that people are t This was a uick easy read but very nice It reminded me of a Sarah Dessen book but with younger characters I loved the setting and the plot I FELT relaxed in this setting and loved itThis dog gosh I wanted this dog Can I have Superior I loved the issues and everything about the book It was shorter than I normally like so it was uick It was easy but I still loved it I would be interested in reading from Karen Day I should look into that I ve read all of Karen Day s work and really love it but A Million Miles From Boston is her most universally powerful book yet Her realistic treatment of the emotional subtleties associated with Lucy 12 yr old main character is BRILLIANT powerful book yet Her realistic treatment of the emotional subtleties associated with Lucy 12 yr old main character is BRILLIANT writing is alive because she portrays life as it is and I find myself engaged in the emotional unfolding of her characters while engrossed in the storysetting I also love that I want my children to read this book I look forward to the family discussion about the elements that are relevant to all. T is where she feels most like herself and where memories of her mother who died when Lucy was six are strong and sacredBut this summer nothing is the same Ian a boy from home in Boston comes to Pierson Point with his family Ian is loud popular and mean He and Lu.
